Fly Fishing Educational Classes

Join us at your favorite TCO location to learn more about the exciting world of fly fishing. Whether you are a beginner or want to brush up on your casting skills, there is a class for you. If you don't see a class you are interested in, please let us know. We also offer private lessons tailored to your needs. Our goal at TCO Fly Shop is to make sure that you are successful on the water and that you are having fun doing it!  

Beginner Fly Fishing Schools 

Join TCO as we cover everything you need to get started in the exciting world of fly fishing through our time tested teaching curriculum. Our instructors will patiently explain and educate you on the basic concepts and fundamentals of casting, fly selection, entomology, reading the water and knot tying. The 5 hour hands-on lesson allows ample time for all your questions to be answered and common fly casting problems to be corrected. Don't worry if you do not own a fly rod outfit, TCO is happy to provide a free rental to anyone enrolled
in our Beginners School. We will also provide refreshments during the day. The only thing you need to have on you is a PA fishing license.TCO instructors will work with you for 5 hours with an equal mix of classroom and on the water time. 
The TCO Beginner Schools will consist of:

    • Choosing the correct equipment
    • Trout Behavior
    • Basic knot tying
    • Casting Workshop
    • Basic dry fly and nymphing presentation
    • Pattern selection
    • Introduction to entomology

Fly Tying Classes 

An instructor will lead the class in tying the fly of the week and help individuals with skills and techniques to make tying fun and easy. These classes will be geared towards beginners, but experienced fly tiers are welcome as well, there will be plenty of tips and tricks to learn. Students should bring their own vice and tools. 

Fly Tying Classes will consist of:

    • Choosing the correct equipment
    • How to tie a specific pattern
    • How to use materials
    • How to choose materials

TCO Boiling Springs One Day Fly Fishing School | 9am - 4pm
Our one-day clinic focuses on the fundamentals of fly casting. it is designed for beginners who want to get started on the right way in a relaxed atmosphere with patient instructors. It is also a great way for more experienced anglers to hone their casting skills by focusing on basic casting mechanics. You will master the roll cast, basic cast, false casting and shooting line with the aid of video analysis. The origins and history of fly fishing along with terminology, knot tying, and tackle selection will be covered as well. Class includes lunch.

TCO Boiling Springs Two Day Fly Fishing School:
Our most popular offering, this two-day clinic combines the fundamentals of fly fishing with practical experience.  It is tailored for the person who wants an in-depth introduction to the sport.  The first day of the class covers basic casting mechanics as well as the tackle and knots used in the sport.  Time will be spent in the classroom, on the grass, and on the water in this school as you master these skills, with the help of excellent instructors, to develop a cast that is efficient, effective, and repeatable.  We will also begin a discussion on fly design and how it relates to what fish eat.
The second day will be spent primarily on the lake just outside TCO’s door and the stream that it feeds.  You will be introduced to riparian ecology, fly selection (matching the hatch), reading water, moving water casts, line management, presentation casts, and aquatic entomology.  We will use video analysis of your cast to help improve the mechanics that you learned on the first day.

Introduction to Fly Tying:
Catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself is often a milestone for anglers. Our introduction to fly tying class will help you master fundamental tying techniques so you leave with the knowledge and experience required to tie basic fly patterns. Don't worry if you've never tied before, we'll thoroughly cover the basics in a step-by-step approach and have you tying flies in no time.

*Limited to 6 Students
DATES: 2 Dates Available: October 15th OR November 13th
TIME: Class is 3 hours long,  9:30am-12:30pm

European Nymphing Techniques:

Classes will be held on Spring Creek, so please bring Waders, Boots, Rods, Reels, and weather-appropriate clothing. If you do not have any of these, please let us know in advance and we will provide them for you.

Strictly Under The Surface Nymphing Techniques:

Never know how to pick the proper water depth for your strike indicator? Are you using too much weight, and consistently getting stuck on the river bottom? Or are you having trouble with fly selection? You will learn about all of these things as well as proper rod and reel set up, reading water, and leader construction! Trout are eating sub surface 365 days a year, why not target them where they feed the most?! Learn how to do all of these things and more.

Tight Line Nymphing with John Parisi:

Join John Parisi for a day of tight line nymphing instruction. Topics will include: equipment selection, leaders, sighters, rigging, flies, knowing when and when NOT to tight line, proper angles and approach, casting and line control, hook sets, and fighting and landing fish. Classes will be held on the water, so please bring waders, boots, rods, reels, and weather-appropriate clothing. If you do not have any of these, please let us know in advance and we will provide them for you.

John Parisi will break down his method of approach for the many limestone springs creeks of Pennsylvania. Topics will include: Equipment selection, rigging, flies, techniques for selective trout, approaching the water, limiting movement, adapting to pressure, and much more. The class will begin with observing John dissect a piece of water from start to finish.

Terrestrials: Top to Bottom with John Parisi:

As the consistent hatches of Spring time begin to fade, trout turn their attention to terrestrial based food sources such as ants, beetles, crickets, hoppers, and many other insect species. John Parisi will walk you through his favorite summertime activity and show you the ins and outs of terrestrial fishing for trout. The class will begin with observing John dissect a piece of water from start to finish.
