2020 Fly Fishing Educational Classes

Join us at your favorite TCO location to learn more about the exciting world of fly fishing. Whether you are a beginner or want to brush up on your casting skills, there is a class for you. If you don't see a class you are interested in, please let us know. We also offer private lessons tailored to your needs. Our goal at TCO Fly Shop is to make sure that you are successful on the water and that you are having fun doing it! 

Beginner Fly Fishing Schools 
Join TCO as we cover everything you need to get started in the exciting world of fly fishing through our time tested teaching curriculum. Our instructors will patiently explain and educate you on the basic concepts and fundamentals of casting, fly selection, entomology, reading the water and knot tying. The 5 hour hands-on lesson allows ample time for all your questions to be answered and common fly casting problems to be corrected. Don't worry if you do not own a fly rod outfit, TCO is happy to provide a free rental to anyone enrolled
in our Beginners School. We will also provide refreshments during the day. The only thing you need to have on you is a PA fishing license.

TCO instructors will work with you for 5 hours with an equal mix of classroom and on the water time. 

The TCO Beginner Schools will consist of:

  • Basic knot tying
  • Casting Workshop
  • Basic dry fly and nymphing presentation
  • Pattern selection
  • Introduction to entomology

Tight Line Nymphing Tactics

Class will be held on Spring Creek, so please bring Waders, Boots, Rods, Reels, and weather appropriate clothing. If you do not have any of these, please let us know in advance and we will provide them for you.

Introduction to Largemouth Bass with a Fly Rod

September 13th - 10am 2pm

About: Why let the conventional anglers have all the fun? We have great access to lakes and ponds with fantastic bass fishing when our trout streams are too warm to fish safely. In this class we will learn about the movements and feeding patterns of our friends Larry and Loretta Largemouth and how to effectively target them with a fly rod. This class will take place on a private pond to ensure privacy and casting elbow room.
This class will be instructed by TCO Reading's Sam Reibman and is limited to 6 people

Trout Streamer Tactics
October 18th | November 15th - 10am 2pm

About: In this class we will cover how to effectively fish streamers both big and small for trout. We will cover the biology of the larger food sources for trout, the flies used to imitate those those foods, the rods and lines required to present those flies, and how to use that equipment to effectively present those flies and draw strikes from trophy trout.

Nymph Fishing 101 - Understanding the basics - November 8th

About: Let’s be honest, if you want to catch more fish, you nymph.  For this class we will focus on the basics of indicator nymph fishing. Covering when indicator nymph fishing is the most effective; build some solid nymph rigs covering single nymph, double nymph, hopper dropper, and indicator/ weight placement.  We'll dig into fly selection and where those flies should be fished in the water level. We'll also work on making sure you can cast those nymph rigs with clean presentation and less messes, and most importantly how to mend and ensure drag free drifts, detect strikes, and set the hook. All of this will give you the tools to cover more water and catch more fish!
This class will be instructed by TCO Reading's Andy Ellis and is limited to 6 people

TCO Boiling Springs One Day Fly Fishing School | 9am - 4pm
Our one-day clinic focuses on the fundamentals of fly casting. it is designed for beginners who want to get started on the right way in a relaxed atmosphere with patient instructors. It is also a great way for more experienced anglers to hone their casting skills by focusing on basic casting mechanics. You will master the roll cast, basic cast, false casting and shooting line with the aid of video analysis. The origins and history of fly fishing along with terminology, knot tying and tackle selection will be covered as well. Class includes lunch.

TCO Boiling Springs Two Day Fly Fishing School
Our most popular offering, this two-day clinic combines the fundamental of fly fishing with practical experience. It is tailored for the person who wants an in-depth introduction to the sport. The first day of the class covers basic casting mechanics as well as the tackle and knots used in the sport. Time will be spent in our classroom and on the lake just outside as you master the skills, with the help of video analysis, to develop a cast that is efficient, effective and repeatable. We will also begin a discussion on fly design and how it relates to what fish eat. 

The second day will be spent primarily on the stream. You will be introduced to riparian ecology, fly selection (matching the hatch), reading water, moving water casts, presentation casts, line management and aquatic entomology. Later in the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to catch your first fish on a fly as you are guided by your instructors. You will leave this class with a foundation of skills and knowledge that will allow you to enjoy fly fishing and continue learning on your own. Class includes lunch.

Fly Fishing 101 FREE CLASS
If you're looking for a great way to get the family together outside, our Fly Fishing 101 class is the perfect event to get started. Fly fishing is a sport the whole family can participate in. All ages are welcome to attend the event, but those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Bring the whole family and learn what this great sport is all about.
