Join us at your favorite TCO location to learn more about the exciting world of fly fishing. Whether you are a beginner or want to brush up on your casting skills, there is a class for you. If you don't see a class you are interested in, please let us know. We also offer private lessons tailored to your needs. Our goal at TCO Fly Shop is to make sure that you are successful on the water and that you are having fun doing it! 

Beginner Fly Fishing Schools 
Join TCO as we cover everything you need to get started in the exciting world of fly fishing through our time tested teaching curriculum. Our instructors will patiently explain and educate you on the basic concepts and fundamentals of casting, fly selection, entomology, reading the water and knot tying. The 5 hour hands-on lesson allows ample time for all your questions to be answered and common fly casting problems to be corrected. Don't worry if you do not own a fly rod outfit, TCO is happy to provide a free rental to anyone enrolled
in our Beginners School. We will also provide refreshments during the day. The only thing you need to have on you is a PA fishing license.

TCO instructors will work with you for 5 hours with an equal mix of classroom and on the water time. 

The TCO Beginner Schools will consist of:

  • Basic knot tying
  • Casting Workshop
  • Basic dry fly and nymphing presentation
  • Pattern selection
  • Introduction to entomology

Dry Fly Strategies - April 25th

9am - 2pm Rain or Shine

It’s hard to argue with the visual aspect, excitement and challenge of fishing on top. Now is the time to sharpen your skills and up your dry fly game, so come spend a day learning the basics and as well as some of the finer details that will make you a more effective dry fly fisherman. The class will cover topics such as – rigging and leader design, avoiding drag, when to fish emergers, adjustments to make when a fish does not take your fly, and more.

  • How to approach rising trout
  • Presenting the fly
  • Casts to improve presentation
  • Prospecting with dries

Advanced Dry Fly Techniques - April 19th 

About: Do you ever find yourself fishing dry flies but for some reason you can't ever get that one picky fish to eat? Or maybe you're still unsure of how to effectively fish a spinner fall? Or maybe the words dun, cripple and emerger aren't quite as familiar as they should be. We'll be going covering everything you need to know to bring your dry-fly fishing to the next level. We'll be covering everything from selecting patterns to reading water to improving your presentation. Come out with Wiley Paul, TCO staffer and longtime guide on the West Branch of the Delaware River, and gain some knowledge that will allow you to experience more of those heart-stopping dry-fly eats!

Streamers 101 - May 10th

About: So you've started fly-fishing and nymphing under an indicator is working, but you're looking to be more versatile on the water. You see all this craze over streamers, but it seems like too much investment, or maybe it just seems like it's too big of a switch from your comfortable 9' 5x leader you've always used. In this class, we'll break down the basics of streamer fishing for trout. We'll look at different streamers to use, when to use them,  and how to set-up a solid streamer rig. When you're done, you'll be able to better understand why that sculpin, crayfish, or baitfish pattern will give you the best chance to catch the largest fish in your home water.

Streamers 201 - The Next Level - June 21st 

About: This is for the angler looking to add things like grain weight, double streamer rigs, and upstream presentations to their streamer-fishing arsenal. Whether you've been fishing one wooly bugger or slumpbuster down and across for way too long, or you just want to be able to be more effectively fish big streamers on your local water, this is it. We'll go through leader building, next-level streamer selection, and plenty of other helpful tips to make you more confident in your ability to present to, hook, and catch more large fish every time you go out.

Nymph Fishing 101 - Understanding the basics - August 11th 

About: Let’s be honest, if you want to catch more fish, you nymph.  For this class we will focus on the basics of indicator nymph fishing. Covering when indicator nymph fishing is the most effective; build some solid nymph rigs covering single nymph, double nymph, hopper dropper, and indicator/ weight placement.  We'll dig into fly selection and where those flies should be fished in the water level. We'll also work on making sure you can cast those nymph rigs with clean presentation and less messes, and most importantly how to mend and ensure drag free drifts, detect strikes, and set the hook. All of this will give you the tools to cover more water and catch more fish!
This class will be instructed by TCO Reading's Andy Ellis and is limited to 6 people



TCO Boiling Springs One Day Fly Fishing School | 9am - 4pm
Our one-day clinic focuses on the fundamentals of fly casting. it is designed for beginners who want to get started on the right way in a relaxed atmosphere with patient instructors. It is also a great way for more experienced anglers to hone their casting skills by focusing on basic casting mechanics. You will master the roll cast, basic cast, false casting and shooting line with the aid of video analysis. The origins and history of fly fishing along with terminology, knot tying and tackle selection will be covered as well. Class includes lunch.

TCO Boiling Springs Two Day Fly Fishing School
Our most popular offering, this two-day clinic combines the fundamental of fly fishing with practical experience. It is tailored for the person who wants an in-depth introduction to the sport. The first day of the class covers basic casting mechanics as well as the tackle and knots used in the sport. Time will be spent in our classroom and on the lake just outside as you master the skills, with the help of video analysis, to develop a cast that is efficient, effective and repeatable. We will also begin a discussion on fly design and how it relates to what fish eat. 

The second day will be spent primarily on the stream. You will be introduced to riparian ecology, fly selection (matching the hatch), reading water, moving water casts, presentation casts, line management and aquatic entomology. Later in the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to catch your first fish on a fly as you are guided by your instructors. You will leave this class with a foundation of skills and knowledge that will allow you to enjoy fly fishing and continue learning on your own. Class includes lunch.

Fly Fishing 101 FREE CLASS
If you're looking for a great way to get the family together outside, our Fly Fishing 101 class is the perfect event to get started. Fly fishing is a sport the whole family can participate in. All ages are welcome to attend the event, but those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Bring the whole family and learn what this great sport is all about.
