For anglers who love a serious challenge, I cannot recommend strongly enough a week of permit fishing from Water Caye, Belize. This beautiful island is perched right on Belize's world famous Barrier Reef and in all my travels I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful island in my life. Crystal clear azure waters with towering palm trees and lots of sand is what you will encounter when arriving at the island.
Situated about 16 miles off the coast of central Belize, and right on the Barrier Reef...Water Caye is uniquely positioned where anglers can reach the best permit flats in the World! The tidal flats, both north and south of Water Caye, are hard packed coral that run straight in to deep water and virtually all the fishing is done while wading. The permit come on to these flats to feed and anglers will be casting almost exclusively to permit tailing in 1-3 feet of water. Without question, this is the most challenging and demanding fly fishing I know of and have ever done.
If you love to fish for permit, or want to experience the ultimate location for tailing permit, you need to join us at Water Caye.
The base while fishing from Water Caye is the Blue Marlin Resort. Owned and operated by our travel partners old friend, Rozella Zabaneh, the Blue Marlin has comfortable accommodations with A/C and private bath with hot and cold water. The bar overlooks the ocean and is well stocked and even has a pool table.
ABOUT THE TRIP
Water Caye is located off the coast of South/Central Belize, roughly 16 miles off the coastal town of Dangriga. This is the place you see in your mind’s eye when envisioning a tropical island paradise surrounded by azure waters. Without question, this is one of the most visually stunning locations in all the Caribbean. The island used to be a coconut plantation back in the 50’s and 60’s and now has a couple of resorts on it as well as several private homes. The island is located right on the reef and there is a lovely flat at the back of the island that stretches the entire length of the island.
Arrival Guests will fly into Belize City International Airport, (Airport code BZE) where you will then be met by our airport assistant Lily. Belize International Airport is not that big and is very easy to navigate through. We will be escorted over to our domestic air carrier (Tropic Air) for the 20 minute flight south to the coastal town of Dangriga. After deboarding the plane in Dangriga and collecting our luggage, we will be met by our van and driver, who will drive us down to the Blue Marlin Lodge pier. The water taxi will be waiting for us as it's just a quick 35 minute ride out to the island from town.
The Fishing Environment
Water Caye is situated right in the middle of what we believe to be the best skinny water permit fishery in the world. The flats extend both north and south of the island and we’ve never been anywhere that consistently produces more permit than this location. There are several good permit grounds to the north of South Water Caye, starting in the Sand Fly Range, as well as in the Blue Ground Range of cayes, which is located directly to the west of Water Caye. To the south, the countless saltwater permit flats are the finest in the world. These pristine flats hold excellent numbers of permit, and can be counted on for numerous quality shots while wading. Some of the flats are as close as a 10 minute boat ride from the island but the average run from the lodge is anywhere from 20-40 minutes. The permit fishing in this area takes place on sand and coral based tidal flats in about 1-3 feet of water.
Guests here will be casting to tailing permit in much the same way you have for tailing bonefish in other locations. In general, these flats are hard packed and offer very solid footing. However, there are a few flats where there is a significant amount of dead coral and other shell debris where footing can be uneven. Guests can expect to see 20-40 tailing fish per day and we’ve had 75+ fish days every year for the past decade. The majority of the fishing for permit is done while wading, making this one of anglings ultimate challenges!
Tarpon are also available at Water Caye, with the best time to target the silver kings being late spring and early summer. There are several schools of resident tarpon that can be fished year round. By mid April, both the Tobacco Caye and Water Caye channels become active feeding zones for the migratory tarpon that run the reef. Bring a 12 weight rod!
Because the island is located right on the reef, there are an abundance of reef species to target. Large barracudas prowl the reef and if the weather allows, it’s always a great deal of fun to slip outside the reef to look for schools of tuna and the occasional dorado.
The grounds of the Blue Marlin lodge are well maintained and there are sand and palm trees throughout the resort. The lodge and its accompanying buildings take up most of the northern part of the island, with just a few older private homes found to the north of the lodge. It is safe to walk around the island at night and there are two resorts to the south of the Blue Marlin, one of which operates a small bar.
