A Review of the Sage One
By Jake Villwock
I have had
the great pleasure of fishing the 590-4
Sage One for a while now and I would have
to say that it is one on my all-time favorite
rods. From Eastern Pa trout streams where
presentation and light tippet is a must,
to fishing the Madison River MT with large
size 6 hoppers and heavy indicator rigs,
the Sage One can do it all. On top of
handling dry flies and nymphs I’ve
had this rod out on a few Smallmouth streams,
throwing tungsten cone headed Zuddlers
and oversized mouse patterns, this rod
has the power behind it! Sage is using
new Konnetic technology to achieve the
lightest blanks with the most power. These
rods have a perfectly balanced feel to
them, not being tip heavy, they lay in
your hand with comfort and it is a joy
to cast this rod all day long. One of
my favorite parts about fishing this rod
with dry flies is its accuracy; this rod
is accurate at 20 feet as well as 60 feet.
It has a very nice flex to it to help
with those long hook sets on bigger fish,
all while having enough back bone to really
control fish of all sizes. This rod is
built thinner and lighter than any rod
on the market yet is one of the most powerful
rods I have fished. Check out the new
rod tube size for 5wts and lighter, they
have made them thinner to match the rods.
Unlike many previous Sage models the One
is powerful but delicate. The 5wt SA GPX
taper fly line complements this rod very
well and makes it easy to cast and get
any length of line out that you need to
reach your target. I had both an Abel
Super 4N and Litespeed 1.5 on this rod
and both balanced nicely. If you are new
to the sport and looking for one rod to
get you started or a veteran just looking
to expand his collection this rod is it.
It is light but strong, very smooth casting,
nice looking and all around a fantastic
rod for all trout applications.
If you are an avid saltwater/big game
fisherman don’t worry stop in the
shop and check out the 890-4 One, this
rod is only a touch heavier than the 590-4
and you will be amazed at how light and
powerful this rod is.
The name “One” really does
mean the one rod that can do it all!
