QUESTIONS
WITH GAVIN
When and why did you start
fly fishing?
Like most people
I started out as a kid fishing the ponds
and streams close to home with a spin
rod. About 16 years ago my friend’s
father gave me a fly rod. I learned to
tie flies at the same time. It was rough
going in the beginning, I didn’t
know any fly fisherman or tiers and I
only had a few books to get information
from. I learned on the water by doing
things the hard way, but honestly, I wouldn’t
change a thing.
What is your
favorite type of fly fishing? (ie fresh,
salt, nymph, dry etc…)
Sounds like a lame answer but it’s
all good in my book. I’m just as
happy nymphing as I am fishing to rising
trout. Streamer fishing and it’s
techniques provide a lot of cross over
for a wide variety of species, so I spend
a lot of time working on those skills.
I guess I’d say streamer fishing
out of a drift boat is pretty high on
my list.
What are your
favorite waters to fish?
It really depends
on what type of fish I’m after.
As far as trout, I put in a good deal
of time on the Little Lehigh, the Tulpehocken
and other area streams. Over the last
few years I’ve spent a lot of time
rowing the Lehigh and the Delaware in
the water gap. The Little J is a cool
place, it’s always a good time on
that water. There is so much with in an
hour’s drive though that gets overlooked…
When you’re
not fishing, what are you doing? Past
times, Hobbies etc…
Probably tying flies or spending time
with my wife and kids. They all like to
fish or at least be on the water so I’m
pretty lucky that I get to share that
with them. I’ve got an art background
so I try to squeeze in some photography,
drawing and painting when I can.
What are your
plans for the future within TCO, what
projects are you working on and when can
we expect to see them come to fruition?
I’m hoping to help build our guide
program in the Reading store and offer
customers more opportunity for float trips
next year. Also I’m working to offer
a broader range of classes to help expand
our education program. We are hoping to
reach out to kids as well.
