Simms Guide Wader
Back by popular demand, Simms
is reintroducing its popular Guide Waders
for the 2012 season. We just got a few
pairs into the shop and I can see why
they were so popular. Priced at $399.95,
they serve as a viable middle ground between
Simms’ Headwaters Stockingfoot and
the G3 Guide wader. Here are a few of
the technical aspects behind the Guide
Wader.
1) The
Guide is a full Gore-Tex wader. It features
3-layer Gore-Tex around the entire leg
while also having reinforced knee panels
to protect your waders while you’re
on your knees stalking eve the wariest
of fish.
2) Similar to the G3,
Simms has moved the leg stitching from
between the legs to the front of the leg
panel. This greatly reduces the amount
of pinhole damage caused by chafing while
walking that we saw in previous models
of waders.
3) Also similar to the
G3, is the flip out pocket. For a minimalist
like myself, this is huge. I fish completely
out of this pocket more often than not.
4) The Guide Waders are
manufactured completely in Bozeman Montana.
I can definitely appreciate any domestically
manufactured product.
Now, on to one of the
coolest things about the Guide Wader.
It has HUGE leg openings. Maybe I’m
built a little weird, but I have the hardest
time finding the right fit in anything
from jeans to waders. What can I say?
I have the legs and behind of a big man.
I tried on a pair of the waders and they
fit perfectly. There wasn’t any
of the “wader shimmy” happening
while I pulled these waders on and off
because of the design and construction
of the lower half of these waders.
In naming any fly fishing-related
product a “Guide” model, the
manufacturer is hinting at the product’s
durability. It conveys the idea that it
is something that a guide could confidently
wear on a day-to-day basis. Like all Simms
products, that is definitely true with
these waders. They are a well-constructed,
durable, and comfortable pair of waders
that will last the average fisherman a
long time…without putting a huge
dent in your wallet.
If you’re in the
market for new waders, the Guide Wader
rightfully deserves a second look. And
if you’re built like me, they should
be the first pair that you try on because
you’re going love them just as much
as I do.
