“Sage
TCX, The Line Upon the Wind”
By
Chris Frangiosa
There are a few things
that can ruin a great day of fishing.
Top of the list is wind, rain and
other nasty weather. Mother nature
can be vicious and cruel, particularly
in the saltwater vein. I have had
many trips with groups that are extremely
excited to arrive to some tropical
paradise until they feel the first
gust of the offshore wind. Realization
sets in; the gear on board is hopelessly
inadequate for the task. Fortunately
for us, the Sage Rod Co. has created
a beast that can deter Mother Nature,
a rod that can push the line upon
the wind. The Sage TCX!
After spending some
time fishing and casting the Sage
TCX, I have come to a few conclusions.
Firstly, this is one of the lightest
most powerful rods that I have cast
in years. This rod requires very little
effort to achieve great accurate distances.
It’s hard for me to conceive
a fishing situation in which this
rod would fall to the earths ever
changing conditions. Given this is
not a lightweight trout rod, but it
was not intended to be. This is the
rod you grab when you have to make
long casts to Bonefish on a windy
Bahamian flat or you have to present
a foam hopper to large Brown Trout
on a wide heavy flowing western river.
Secondly, the TCX
represents a Darwinian growth of Sage’s
most legendary rod series. We all
have rods that we have loved in the
past; rods that we will argue to other
anglers are better than any new offering.
For Sage however the TCX is an evolution
of its greatest rod series. Imagine
combining the strength and durability
of the Xi2, the quickness and lightness
of the XP, and the distance and arrogance
of the TCR, what would you get? You
get a Sage TCX; consider the argument
resolved.
Sage offers the TCX in line weights
from 4 to 10 and also in Spey for
9 or 10 weights. Prices run from $780
- $925 depending on the rod. Stop
into your local TCO shop and cast
one!
