“Dare
I Argue with Louis Sullivan”
-Form Follows Function,
Why Not Both-
Hatch Outdoors Reel Co.
The general consensus
among designers is that form should
follow function. The saying “form
follows function” debatably
coined by architect Louis Sullivan
assures the users of their creations
that they won’t crumble in the
wind, fail at the height of use or
just generally give out at the moment
of the greatest stress. The secondary
concern is that the item looks good,
in order to get the public to buy
it. It’s a hard balance that
few designers have achieved, yet I
would argue that The Hatch Reel Co.
has created a fishing reel that equally
balances both form and function in
a way that definitely has the public
stimulated.
Based in Vista California,
Hatch is a relative newcomer in the
fly-fishing reel market. The reels
they are creating use innovative drag
surfaces in a very durable industrial
looking shell. In essence Form and
Function on par with one another.
Hatch makes the Seattle Central Library
(look this up if you haven’t
seen it) of reels, a shell that displays
the finest form but and interior that
is all function with no compromises.
All Hatch reels use
a stacked washer drag system that
incorporates a combination of Aluminum
and Rulon Washers. As the reel gets
bigger, so does the washer stack enabling
the weight of the reel to match the
fishing application. Reels are sized
from the 3 Plus (3-5wt), 5 Plus (5-7wt),
7 Plus (7-9wt), 9 Plus (9-12wt) to
the monster 12 Plus (12 and above.)
Anglers can choose the color reel
that they so desire which basically
allows the text and drag system to
be Blue, Green, Red or All Black.
The end of this story
is simple, Hatch Reels look amazing
and work just as well. Do yourself
a favor and stop by to see one of
these new creations. It is truly something
to behold when form and function are
equally matched and it’s even
better when it gives a reason to buy
more gear. I am very excited to have
Hatch as part of our selection in
the stores and am sure to have one
with me on all of my upcoming expeditions.
