Fly-Fishing is a gear intensive sport. I have always been a gear guy, so having the job of Buyer for TCO Fly Shop, inc helps to calm my addiction slightly. It doesn’t however take away my love of the hundreds of new products coming out every year. This monthly column is constructed to let our customers know what the employees here at TCO are excited about and also to serve as a informative and enthusiastic view on gear that we sell in our stores and on the web.
Enjoy!

“A Line in the Sand”

By Chris Frangiosa

There are companies around the world these days that have decided to be as environmentally conscience as possible. These are brands that TCO applaud and enjoy doing business with. One such company is the Brodin Landing Net company. Brodin has been making the finest landing nets in the world for 30 years, which in itself is a reason to buy one. Now however, Brodin has raised the stakes. The people at Brodin have decided that their wooden nets were taking too great a toll on the forests in Costa Rica and have vowed for 2010 to make all of their nets out of teak. Teak is more easily grown and can be replanted and reused in a few short years. This puts Brodin is a special category for me; a category that includes Simms (Vibram Boots), Patagonia (1% for the planet) and only a few others. Let’s celebrate these companies for thinking of the future and drawing a line in the sand that says, this is the only planet we have so let’s protect it.

Brodin offers nets in every imaginable size and shape. These nets have been proven to be durable and effective by anglers all over the world. Brodin offers two net bag options, one is knotless fish-safe traditional cotton net and the second is the heralded Ghost Net bag. The Ghost Net bag is a transparent rubber net that is fish safe, environmentally safe and durable. In 2009 90% of our Brodin nets were sold with the Ghost bag. So choose the size and shape you need and start fishing a Brodin Net wherever you go, you’ll land more fish, they will swim away stronger and ready to fight another day.
