Stream: Tulpehocken Creek

Water Conditions: Good for now, but rising

Date of Update: 5/16/2008

Author: Chad Horrigan

Highlight: CFS (flow in cubic feet per inch) - 200cfs (good)
Temp. - 58degrees
Clarity- good
The Tully was stocked early this Spring with adult fish. It was float stocked from the Stilling Basin all the way down to the Paper Mill. All the of the major access spots were stocked by bucket as well.

General Update: At the current level (200cfs) the stream is running at a level which is a little high for this time of year. Look for water levels to rise throughout the day today. The caddis hatches have really turned on over the last few days. Try fishing a CDC caddis or surface emerger to rising fish. There have also been some quality Sulphur hatches. Both of the two common Sulphur species imitations have been taking fish. These are basically yellow sz 16 and 14. This is a great time for fishing streamers as well. Try a Wooly Bugger or Zonker fished deep.

Specifics and Tips: With the warming water temps, the fish will start to feed more actively. Fishing the riffles, slowly and methodically with small nymphs is a good tactic for these conditions. This is the time of year for caddis to start popping! There are quite a few on the water as the hatch seems to be nearing peak .
Trout will feed more actively during the mornings and evenings.. Also, fish are being taken on Pupa and deep-emerging caddis patterns. The fish can be selective so trying the Z-wing pupa, CDC Pop-Caddis would be a good idea.
We are also fishing the Dry-Dropper combinations with a CDC Caddis Adult and a CDC Soft Hackle as the dropper. This set-up has been producing very well both mornings and evenings

Other Information: Be sure to stop in the store next time you visit the Tully... we will be happy to share our favorite fly patterns with you. Also check out our instructional classes - Fly Tying & Fly Fishing Education

Note: In addition to the stocked fish from the Fish Commission, TCO and the Tulpehocken Chapter of Trout Unlimited will continue the fingerling program with our own funds! There will be several raffles throughout the year to raise money for the stocking. For more information about this program, e-mail us. Every dollar counts!

As always, we would like to stress carefully reviving and releasing all fish caught in Tulpehocken Creek. Please practice and advocate catch and release in all streams that can support year round fishing, especially those precious streams that contain wild trout.
