Specifics and Tips:

ANGLERS VISITING OUR AREA.........SPECIFICALLLY THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE JUST FISHED THE DELAWARE RIVER (OR OTHER STREAMS IN NY'S CATSKILL REGION) OR MARYLAND'S GUNPOWDER, PLEASE CLEAN YOUR BOOTS AND WADER WITH A DILUTED BLEACH SOLUTION, OR HOT WATER (OVER 140 DEGREES f) AND LAUNDRY DETERGENT--IT MUST SOAK FOR AT LEAST A HALF HOUR. DIDYMO HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THESE WATERSHEDS. Or even better yet, get a second pair of boots and waders to wear only in infected waters. It's the only sure way not to spread Didymo. .............BE RESPONSIBLE-DONT SPREAD DIDYMO TO THE TULLY!!
Click here to learn more about DIDYMO. This is a real threat to all of us!

Stream: Tulpehocken Creek

Water Conditions: Low but cold

Date of Update: 11/21/2008

Author: Chad Horrigan

Highlight: CFS (flow in cubic feet per inch) - cfs 70(low)
Temp. - 50degrees
Clarity- good

General Update: The Rumors of a fish kill on the Tulpehocken are true. At this point its not clear what is causing the problem. I have spoken with Mike Kaufman (PA State Biologist)... he is on the case! according to him, the die-off is not that severe. Most fisherman are seeing at least a few dead trout at any particular spot, although over the past few days that number has dropped. Once we know more about this problem, I'll be sure to post it.

the At the current level (70cfs) the stream is flowing just about average for this time of year, and water temps are nice and cold with a release temp from the dam at 50. With the current flow and air temps, look for fishing to be best during mid-day and early evening. The stream was stocked recently. Adult fish were stocked from the Dam to rebers bridge and fingerlings from Rebers to the Red Bridge.
With the frost we've had lately, the Trico hatch has all but ended. You may see a few during the late morning. The midge fishing however, has been picking up. Look for pods of fish midging in some of the lower sections. The best way to fish the Tully this time of year is nymphing. With the current flows and water temps, the fish should be feeding very actively. Anything small(sz16-20) and flashy fished deep through the riffles should produce well. This is also a good time to try some streamers. Look for good midge hatches on some of the more overcast days.

Specifics and Tips: When the surface activity slows... try fishing the riffles, slowly and methodically with small nymphs. This is a good tactic for these conditions.
Trout will feed more actively during the late mornings and evenings.. Tully trout can be selective... We are fishing the Dry-Dropper combinations with a CDC Caddis Adult and a CDC Soft Hackle as the dropper. This set-up has been producing very well!

Date of Update: 9/19/2008

Author: Chad Horrigan

Highlight: CFS (flow in cubic feet per inch) - cfs 75(low)
Temp. - 68degrees
Clarity- good

General Update: At the current level (75cfs) the stream is flowing a little low for this time of year, and water temps are fairly warm with a release temp from the dam at 68. With the current flow and air temps, look for fishing to be best during the first and last few hours of light.
The Tricos hatches have been very heavy this year, but as of late have become somewhat selective. Try fishing a Trico Dun early or spinner pattern later in the morning to rising fish. The hatch started off a little slow but as of late it has been very heavy. There have also been some decent late morning caddis hatches. During the evening is a great time for fishing nymphs as well. With the decent water temps and good flows the fish should still be pretty active. Try a lightning bug or small pheasant tail fished deep.

General Update: At the current level (90cfs) the stream is flowing below normal for this time of year. Current levels should hold steady over the next few days. With the current heat, look for fishing to be best during the first and last few hours of light.
The Tricos hatches have really turned on over the last few weeks. Try fishing a Trico Dun early or spinner pattern later in the morning to rising fish. The hatch started off a little slow but as of late it has been very heavy. There have also been some quality Sulphur hatches. Both of the two common Sulphur species imitations have been taking fish. These are basically yellow sz 16 and 14. At this level however, the hatches should be pretty consistent. During the day is a great time for fishing nymphs as well. With the decent water temps and good flows the fish should still be pretty active. Try a lightning bug or small pheasant tail fished deep.

Specifics and Tips: When the surface activity slows... try fishing the riffles, slowly and methodically with small nymphs. This is a good tactic for these conditions.
Trout will feed more actively during the mornings and evenings.. Tully trout can be selective... We are fishing the Dry-Dropper combinations with a CDC Caddis Adult and a CDC Soft Hackle as the dropper. This set-up has been producing very well!

Highlight: CFS (flow in cubic feet per inch) - 345cfs (high/good)
Temp. - 58degrees
Clarity- good

General Update: At the current level (345cfs) the stream is flowing above normal. High water should continue for a few more days.
The caddis hatches have really turned on over the last few weeks. Try fishing a CDC caddis or surface emerger to rising fish. There have also been some quality Sulphur hatches. Both of the two common Sulphur species imitations have been taking fish. These are basically yellow sz 16 and 14. At this level however, the hatches will be sporadic at best. Once water levels return to normal, the hatches should return to normal as well. This is a great time for fishing streamers as well. Try a Wooly Bugger or Zonker fished deep.

Stream: Tulpehocken Creek

Water Conditions: Very good conditions

Date of Update: 4/18/2008

Author: Chad Horrigan

Highlight: CFS (flow in cubic feet per inch) - 140cfs (high)
Temp. - 54degrees
Clarity- good
The Tully was stocked early this sprin with adult fish. It was float stocked from the Stilling Basin all the way down to the Paper Mill. All the of the major access spots were stocked by bucket as well. Winter conditions are now the norm. Water temps are in the low 50's. Caddis are now starting to pop. Try some adult or emerger imitations in a sz 18 or 20.

General Update: The Tully has been stocked recently with adult fish. There are also a good number of holdover fish from the the previous year.
Fishing has been very good over the past few weeks. Spring conditions are now the norm. water temps are getting warmer, so working some caddis to rising fish would be a good tactic. Good fish can be found throughout, with greater concentrations in the middle and lower stretches. The best fishing right now, is occuring from 9am to about noon time, and then again from 6pm untill dark. In the arfetnoon you may want to fish on the bottom with some flashy nymphs. There are some very big holdovers though throughout the upper section of the river. The fish are starting to get selective and cautious. Its never a bad idea to fish a 12ft leader with 7x tippet
We've been spending a lot of time recently fishing central PA (Spring, Penns, etc.) and the Tully is now fishing as good or better than any stream in the state.

Specifics and Tips: At the current level (140cfs) the stream is currently Running at a normal level for this time of year. At this level, the Tully is plenty fishable. Look for water levels to hold steady over the next few days.. Water temps range from the mid to lower 50's.
With the warming water temps, the fish will start to feed more actively. Fishing the riffles, slowly and methodically with nymphs and streamers is a good tactic for these conditions. This time of year caddis can appear almost any day. Look for warmer days with some cloud cover.
The fish will feed more actively during the mornings and evenings.. Also, fish are being taken on Pupa and deep-emerging caddis patterns. The fish can be selective so trying the Z-wing pupa, CDC Pop-Caddis or Lafontaine style emergers would be a good idea.
Dry-Dropper combinations with a CDC Caddis Adult and a CDC Soft Hackle as the dropper have been producing very well. Both mornings and evenings are very strong with some slow down in hatch activity between 10am and 2pm... but you'll see fish rising all day.

Other Information: If you haven't fished the Tully in a while... you should try it now... it's really fishing well.
Tully trout are well "educated" so if you need some help, don't hesitate to give us a call or fish with one of our guides for a 1/2 day to learn the tricks of the Tully... this will prove to be money well spent!
Have fun and enjoy the fishing on Tully... Also, please respect other fishermen, we all need to enjoy the resource!

The Tully was stocked early this fall with adult fish. It was float stocked from the Stilling Basin all the way down to the Paper Mill. All the of the major access spots were stocked by bucket as well. Winter conditions are now the norm. Water temps are in the low 40's. Try dead drifting nymphs on the bottom.

General Update: The Tully has been stocked recently with adult fish. There are also a good number of holdover fish from the the previous year.
Fishing has continued to be decent, even with winter conditions hanging on. water temps are getting warmer, so working some nymphs, methodically and slowly would be a good bet. Try something flashy. Good fish can be found throughout, with greater concentrations in the middle and lower stretches. The best fishing right now, is occuring from 11am to about 3pm.

Specifics and Tips: At the current level (165cfs) the stream is currently Running at a normal level for this time of year. At this level, the Tully is plenty fishable. Look for water levels to hold steady over the next few days.. Water temps range from the mid to upper 40's.
With the warming water temps, the fish will start to feed more actively. Fishing the riffles, slowly and methodically with nymphs is a good tactic for these conditions. This time of year midge's can appear almost any day. Look for warmer days with some cloud cover.
The fish will feed more actively during the day-time..

General Update: The Tully has been stocked this fall with adult fish. There are also a good number of holdover fish from the the previous year.
Fishing has continued to be decent, even with winter conditions moving in. water temps are getting low, so working some nymphs, methodically and slowly would be a good bet. Try something flashy. Good fish can be found throughout, with greater concentrations in the middle and lower stretches. The best fishing right now, is occuring from 11am to about 3pm.

Specifics and Tips: At the current level (450cfs) the stream is currently Running at a level which high for this time of year, however it does remain fishable. Look for water levels to drop over the next few days.. Water temps range from the mid to lower 40's.
With the cold water temps, the fish will not move much to feed. Fishing the riffles, slowly and methodically with nymphs is a good tactic for these conditions. This time of year midge's can appear almost any day. Look for warmer winter days with some cloud cover.
The fish will feed more actively during the day-time..
