Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: Low But Fishing Well. Cool Nights=Cool Water Temps. In Low 60's AM

Date of Update: 8/25/2008

Author: N. Murphy for R. Finn (off in Alaska!)

Highlight: Isos are here! Evening fishing is great. RACHEL IS BACK. sHSunny and in the 80's today. River is just about perfect shape again this am. We've been about 10 degrees cooler than normal. Lake Champlain is at 98+'. Has never ever been that level in August. 15 inches of rain since June 1. SPRING LEVELS IN AUGUST which will make for a great fall season. Big fish moving around. Water is clear for as much rain as we've had. No rain last night. River has come down some more. Wade carefully. Chance of showers today. This river can be fished successfuly when it's high. Fish the banks. Fish are active and feeding. Streamers have brought success in high water. This has been an amazing summer for fishing. WADE WITH CARE. DON'T FORGET YOUR WADING STAFF. Know that the river can rise quickly many hours after a rain as the water runs off the high peaks. Don't get caught in the middle or on the other side. BE AWARE OF RISING LEVELS DURING YOUR FISHING DAY.

General Update: Iso's are here. Fish being caught on duns/emergers & nymphs. Tricos are also around. Spinners still fall in high water, but the fish don't always rise to them. Summer sun calls for early start, "early" being a relative term, We're talking dawn: 5:00-6:00 AM til about 9:30. Tricos are in the pools. When the sun hits the water, it all usually shuts down. There's always the night shift. it is a known fact that big trout are nocturnal, one of the largest trout Rachel has caught here was at 11:30 PM on a dry fly- you can hear the take- a 27" brown, on a fly that a guy from Oregon gave her in the shop one day..........so much for scientific theory. so grab your 2x and your big fly box, and headlamp and go. Be sensible and bring a pal , that way when you get a bat caught in your line someone will be there to laugh at you- common sense and safety are important- hit a spot you already know.Do yourself a favor and buy a map- a good one, We like the Gazetteer. Now take it out and look at it and see just how many large rivers and small streams there are around here. Go exploring- northern New York has a ton of good stuff. Another option is warm water species- bass and pike on a fly rod are awesome. The Saranac Lake chain is amazing with it's manual locks and great population of grizzly bass and pike. We have guides available for that experience. It's big water, so you need to go with someone who knows where the fish are.

Specifics and Tips: So how do you skitter a fly? Here's Raachel's version: Imagine you are trying to lift the fly from the surface of the water, but it is stuck because of surface tension....lift your rod (high) and twitch and lift the fly across the water.while it is true that the rods position compromises your hook set it can be done- this is where your line hand comes in- you must deal with your accumulating slack line. Try it this way or any other method that works for you- the moral is: MOVE THAT FLY It's the time of year when you get the "tired summer rise" y'know, when a trout kinda sorta tries to take your dry- sometimes, if you go down in size on the pattern it will work- or not, mark the fish- rest it and come back later......also time to think about terrestrials hopper/dropper - ants beetles and inch worms. Stealth is a factor when the water is low...rethink the length of your leader use flourocarbon so you can keep a stout tippet. Consider the angle of the sun and your big human shadow! be sneaky- wade carefully and quietly, time to take the studs off, and watch that wading staff........remember -fishing is a form of hunting.

Other Information: Time to hand the report over to Nancy, Jeff and I are on our way to Alaska today! Although I hate to leave the Adirondacks (especially with the fishing so good) it is an awesome experience- we guide week long rafting/ flyfishing trips in the Bristol Bay area. I am looking forward to fishing Moraine Creek, my favorite- home of a zillion bears and some of the best trout fishing on the planet....imagine site fishing to 28=30" "bows, check out our website: flyfishingheaven.com (look under Alaska. I willl return in late August, just a quick trip this year- I'm gettin' too old for all that work....Stop by the shop and visit Nancy, she will need some TLC, she's taking care of our 3 dogs while we're away- very brave. Thanks Nancy! ANGLERS VISITING OUR AREA.........SPECIFICALLLY THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE JUST FISHED THE DELAWARE AND CATSKILL REGION, PLEASE CLEAN YOUR FELTS SOAK IN A DILUTED BLEACH AND/ OR DETERGENT IN 140 DEGREE WATER- LET SIT FOR ST LEAST 30 MINUTES. Water Conditions: gettin' down there......rain- please. am 63 pm 70

Date of Update: 7/17/2008

Author: R.Finn

Highlight: it was MOVING. The old skitteroo was the trick with a dry- or a stripped streamer. they probably would have crushed a moving nymph ...but I never got to it.....Today looks to be bright......

General Update: Summer fishing is here.......don't bum out- still many angling opportunities out there. For the Ausable, it means maybe thinking about splitting your days into am and pm sessions- remember if it's hot, the am is cooler- early! Or opt for the night shift. it is a known fact that big trout are nocturnal, one of the largest trout I have caught here was at 11:30 PM on a dry fly- you can hear the take- a 27" brown, on a fly that a guy from Oregon gave me in the shop one day..........so much for scientific theory. so grab your 2x and your big fly box, and headlamp and go. Go exploring- northern New York has a ton of good stuff. Another option is warm water species- bass and pike on a fly rod are awesome- one catch -it's better to have a boat= you might wanna hire a guide for this one.......... of course we are awaiting the Hex's on Lake Placid..any minute now

Specifics and Tips: So how do you skitter a fly? Here's my version: Imagine you are trying to lift the fly from the surface of the water, but it is stuck because of surface tension....lift your rod (high) and twitch and lift the fly across the water.while it is true that the rods position compromises your hook set it can be done- this is where your line hand comes in- you must deal with your accumulating slack line. Other Information: The shop is now on our super friendly summer hours; 7 days a week 8:30-5:00....so stop in and see nancy and help keep her sane..that's alot of time to spend in a small enclosed area! besides we got some cool stuff to check out..Our 2008 edition T-shirts are here for you collectors.....plus great gear...Fishpond stuff looks awesome, as well as our full selection of flies. Patagonia and Simms waders/shoes. Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: level is receding nicely, temps- cool.....fishable

Date of Update: 5/1/2008

Author: R.Finn

Highlight: most of the run-off is gone......things should start progressing this coming week. water is cool but level is dropping and by the weekend will be very fishable. Some stocking has started on the Ausable.....weather is still freakishly warm, but it looks to cool of and actually rain this week. I have just returned from fishing the Main stem of the Delaware river in Hankins, NY. with my buddy Steve Taggert- an excellent guide! I actually hit it right on! I saw a caddis hatch that was sick, and hooked a couple of bruisers who spanked me , but finally brought a 21" brown to the boat. The wild trout in this river are impressive.....I highly recommend Steve- he is a fishy dude who who likes to find fish in places where people are"nt.

General Update: I would imagine that some salmon would be starting to congregate at the mouth.....if smelt are movin, you will find salmo salar...... trout still in slow mode with cool H20 temps..... try some small streams.......... But it is POND TIME!!!!!!!!!! the ice is off and the fishing is only getting better, so grab your boat and your streamer wallet and get out there......

Specifics and Tips: Nymphs. streamers fished slow. I go with 2x or 3x this time of year, look for deep holding water-

Other Information: SAFE SEX........... Do I have your attention now? you might chuckle, but there are many analogies that can be made here........( sorry for the clutural commentary). It is now time for all of us to change our habits of fishing.... The invasive Algae Didymo has been identified on the West Branch of the Delaware, The Upper Connecticut River, The Battenkill, and the White River. As responsible citizens and anglers it is now time to add decontamination to our beloved angling traditions and rituals......I know it's a pain in the ass, but it's gotta happen. There are a few options here.... A 2% bleach rinse.... which sounds dicey for those expensive shoes and waders. A 4-5% salt bath.....sounding better! A 5% rinse for 30 min with household detergent in water that is 115 or more. Freezing...... just pop the boots in at nite and thaw in the morning. Thorough drying of felt soles......not very realistic Listen, this is serious stuff and I'm no scientist, Check out the site: WWW.biosecurity.govt.nz for more details. We all have to come together on this one-even if you are not traveling to these places.... if you are going from A to B in your own back yard- DO IT! just put it up there with arranging your flybox and cleaning your line before you head out....

Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: Skinny but fishable. Temp; AM 62 PM 68

Date of Update: 9/4/2007

Author: R.Finn

Highlight: The river is about as low as i have ever seen it..... yet there is still some fishing to be had- just pick your spots and more importantly time of day. We've been blessed with cool nights keeping the water at a decent temp. Supposed to get rain this weekend. Fly fishing is the only sport where we pray for rain and insects! Attack of the flying ants!!!!!! watch for these tasty morsels in the evening- you could be mowing your lawn, writing off fishing for the day and POW you see the hatch at your house! Grab your gear and go..... if you are lucky enough to live close by...Can safely say that tricos are pretty much done. May still be some upstream. Iso's are starting up! The Isonychia hatch has begun, with more action downstream than up. Lots of spinners (sz. 10,12) on the water. This is the premier hatch of this river, and if all goes well, will last till the end of Sept. Perfect ISO weather: you can see your breath and it's drizzly. We'd all LOVE that weather about now.

General Update: DIDYMO! HELP US KEEP IT OUT OF THE AUSABLE!!! LEARN MORE! www.biosecurity.govt.nz Rinse, soak, dry, freeze gear to avoid transporting microscopic cells to another fishery. River level is low....it's a good time to practice your stealth routine. Think about things like: your big human shadow, your sloppy water- slappin' presentation, your 6' stub of a leader which is now 3X, and the size of your fly. Are you getting the "tired roll take"? ( a fish that kinda hits and refuses all at the same time.) Try a smaller fly. You can still fish the mondo stoneflies, but do it in heavy water, or with a dropper. Caddis are around as well as Olives, Terrestrials still effective... and I've seen a few various light mayflies. We are fortunate for the cool nights, that are keeping what water we have somewhat cool. Perfect family vacation weather...you can fish very early and come home with a bag of donuts to wake them all up! If you can sneak out toward dusk DO IT. Great spinner falls of ISO's.

Specifics and Tips: Question: What makes a stonefly decide which rock to hatch on? Why do some rocks have a ton of shucks and others have none? Are they social or is it all serendipitous........Try taking a stonefly nymph and strip it around the edges of rocks- also do the same with the Isonychia nymph. Iso patterns in size 12and 14, Stones 6-14, Caddis grey, olive, tan 14-20, Tricos 20 -26, Olives 18-24, Ants, Beetles and Hoppers. Look for flying PM ants in Aug and Sept. Dont have one in your box and the fish are killin' them? try a Henryville Special Caddis. Early Mornings are producing better than PM. Try and find shade and think about the width of the river. Narrow sections will have "more" water and more oxygen.

Other Information: I am back from Alaska, after 5 awesome weeks. Jeff is still there for 3 more...He is such a tough guy! Fishing was excellent as usual, with the Sockeye run lasting longer than I've ever seen it on the Alagnak. The highlight was a float down "Grizzly" Creek-(code name- it's just too good to reveal it's real name). This float is the "Please beat me up trip" it entails floating 45 miles with a 2800f vertical drop. Imagine a 16 ft pontoon raft with 600lbs of gear floating the pocket water below Shadow Rock. This river gets very low and requires super- human effort and will to get down it- dragging, pushing, sawing and sweating required. The reward is some of the most jaw dropping scenery and fishing you will see in your ENTIRE lifetime. This year we floated before the Sockeye were in the river, so we had the BEST DRY FLY FISHING I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!!!! 20- 28" Rainbows and Char on Royal Wulffs. Lot's of'em. It was truly awesome. And of course lot's of bears.... no problems this year- had to yell at a few of them, but they were well behaved. Right now is when they they are everywhere eating salmon. It's good to be home in our beautiful Adirondacks. Trying to get the dogs in shape for Grouse season (book your hunt now- not many openings left). Stop in the shop and check out some sale items- it's that time of year....also consider a Brook Trout trip to twin ponds in Sept and early Oct. or why not make it a Cast and Blast?Wanna fish some public Ponds? some awesome brookies caught by Leonard and his clients last week! The shop is open 7 days a week, give a call for the latest conditions or to book a trip 518 946 7527

Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: River Level: Low and warm. Temp: 68+ Clarity: Crystal

Date of Update: 8/9/2007

Author: N. Murphy

Highlight: It's a gorgeous ADK day. Cool morning, high in the 70's. A break from the heat and humidity. River has cooled down to the mid to high 60's. Still low but fishable, but pay extra attention to the time it takes to fight and land a fish. TRICOS ARE HERE. It's a 6AM - 9AM thing. Had a great BWO hatch this week around 7AM. Size 18's. Just don't fish in the heat of the day. Give the fish a chance. If you fight a fish for even a short time in our low, warm summer water, it's chances of surviving even if it swims from your hand are not good. We would welcome some real rain. Summer rains keep the water temp in the 60's and prevents algae blooms. Remember, the BIG fish will feed at dark or after! Toss something big and nasty out there and make it worth their while to come out and look. Great time to creek crawl and discover some of the small mountain brook trout water. Or rent a canoe and go for some bass. Now there's some fun on a fly rod!!!!

General Update: The first week of August has been hot and dry. We need some good steady rain. When the river comes up after a summer rain storm FISH THE BANKS with a stonefly nymph of toss a terrestrial, drop an ant off the back of a big hopper. Fish spinners in the evening. Summer fishing with tricos & small olives (20-24) on the flat water in the am depending on wind, temp and location. 20-24 rusty spinners have also been taking fish in the early AM. Terrestrials. Stonefly dries and stimulators always a good bet. Remember to fish those big dries and creepy crawlies all through the pocket water and in the riffles. Caddis always a good bet throughout the day.

Specifics and Tips: It's summer, so when you're fishing the pocket water prospect ALL AROUND THE ROCK. Put the fly IN FRONT OF THE ROCK. Fish the riffles. Fish the head of the pool, right at the end of the riffles. LAND THE FISH IN QUICKLY AND RELEASE RESPONSIBLY. Patience is key in the summer conditions....Early AM and upstream has the coolest water temps, did you know that it starts getting light 5:00 AM? Sun rising about 5:40 AM. Also fish some giant terrestrials like the Chernobyl ants, club sandwiches or fat alberts if you have them. The ploppier the cast the better. If all else fails, enjoy the scenery, just look around you and be grateful that you have found some time away from your ratrace to enjoy the gifts of Mother Nature! Days are noticably shorter...means isonychia bicolors are right around the corner!!!!

Other Information: TIME FOR BASS FISHING. One of our guides had a 9 year old and his dad out on a local lake in a canoe last week. BIG BASS. LITTLE BASS. INBETWEEN BASS. When your kid tells you that their arms are tired because they have landed so many fish...it's a good day for you and your guide. Book a trip with one of our Hungry Trout Guides on the lakes/ponds. Nothing like bass fishing on a fly rod. HUNGRY TROUT LOGO T SHIRTS & HATS ARE HERE. Stop in the shop and check out our porch sale- some good stuff- cheap! All winter hats & gloves at 50% off. Pick up a Hungry Trout Bartender shirt and a bathing suit. Just the ticket for our Adirondack 90 degree summer days. BOOK NOW FOR THE ISONYCHIA HATCH IN THE FALL. End of August to early October. Our favorite hatch! Fun to Fish! And there's NO PLACE more stunning than the Adirondacks in the fall. The Hungry Trout guide staff books up quickly for fall fishing, so reserve a date now. Brook trout ponds are amazing in September and October. AND THEN..Pack away the fly fishing gear and get out the guns. IT'S TIME FOR GROUSE HUNTING!!! RACHEL RETURNS AUGUST 1ST! We can't wait to hear the fish and bear stories. From the early reports, they've had a wonderful month of fishing. Good weather + good fishing + good clients = A GREAT TRIP! She'll start guiding again around the 2nd week of August. Call us at 518-946-2117 to get in on the best summer fishing in years up here.

Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: low........we need rain! AM 64PM70

Date of Update: 6/18/2007

Author: R.Finn

Highlight: Dropping levels making for challenging angling.....Drakes on the outs- see ya!!!!! By the way, those are very yellow stoneflies you are seeing downstream, not drakes.Water is warm please fish with as heavy tippet as you can, get fish in quickly, and release with care.... Early AM is best-did you know it was light at 4:30AM?

General Update: Typical summer stuff now... a few of these, a few of those.... Stoneflies, Yellow sallies, caddis, cahills. olives. a few drakes, and still a couple march brown spinners, Get creative, and remember your terrestrial box.

Specifics and Tips: Time to start fishing very stealthily...water is low. " Be vewy Quiet....." -Elmer Fudd. A longtime client of mine enlightened me on Sat. We were fishing an undisclosed location- we had a killer AM session, nymphing and fishing a stimulator with prince dropper. Our PM location was a small shades pool, after seeing 2 small rises and trying various flies, my client (who is from PA) suggested an ant dropper that would fish just under the surface.......Let's just say that it was ........sick........fish were all over it, and we had an even better PM session, landing numerous trout from 8-18"- Thanks Tony D.!

Other Information: Stop in the shop today and say goodbye to Lance, who did a stellar job in the shop this week. Also we have AC for those hot midday breaks.....Twin Ponds is on fire!!!!!! Peter Mack of Long Island landed 29 brook trout on Sat. with 6 of them in the 3Lb range...TRUE STORY,We have pictures!!! Our resident Brook trout PHD- Jeff K. is off to Alaska soon for bear awareness training, but Tom Conway will come out of the bullpen and save the game for ya...give us a call at the shop: 518 946 7527

Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: Temp: AM64 PM70 (higher downstream)level is low

Date of Update: 6/16/2007

Author: R.Finn

Highlight: Does anyone know a rain dance? Best and most ethical time to fish is early.....did you know it is light at 4:30 AM? see ya out there.

General Update: Drakes on the outs......some remnants of March brown spinners, there are alot of stoneflies, some caddis a few cahills, olives and sulphurs. It is time to start fishing terrestrials if you already havent.

Specifics and Tips: Please fish responsibly!!!!! You can kill a trout by playing it too long and releasing it too quickly. It is still fairly crowded- I'm hearing about some very childish behavior out there. GROW UP.......there is plenty of room for all, dont crowd people- the best place to fish is where somebody isnt....... Trout will give you that lazy rise or roll this time of year , be patient and maybe go down a size in fly. A long time client of mine from PA schooled me yesterday and suggested we put an ant dropper on to be fished just under the surface......we had spent the day fishing with a beadhead prince dropper and had good success, our PM stop had some skinny water and intermittent risers....we tried a couple of flies with no result, until the ant.......it was sick- we hooked an outrageous # of trout.......try it, I certainly will use it again. Otherwise, skittering is paramoun twhen fishing is slow - you gotta make them want it.

Other Information: Stop by the shop to say hey and hang out in the AC.......check out these cool satelite image maps of the river by West Branch Graphics, they are very cool and very different. Twin Ponds is on fire!!!!!!!!! Yesterday, Peter Mack of Long Island landed 27 BrookTrout with 6 in the 3LB range- do I have your attention yet? Jeff K. the resident guru is off to Alaska for bear awareness training, but Tom Conway will come out of the bullpen and save the game.

Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: temp is mid 30's level is fishable at present, expecting it to rise.

Date of Update: 4/16/2007

Author: R.Finn

Highlight: It's finally fishing season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

General Update: The season began 4/1 with great weather and levels....... and some nice fish being caught. We had a Nor'easter yesterday which dropped anywhere from 12"+ (depending on elevation). The river is in pretty good shape, I expect the level to rise very soon due to the rain......the late week forcast is calling for some nice weather- but it could be high water......I'll update B4 the wknd.

Specifics and Tips: There are fish to be caught......low and slow is the key- be thorough. Nymphs and streamers are the rule.......Subtlety is not an issue, try something big and appetizing to make Mr. Brown trout feed.....Zonkers- or any other yummy looking streamers. Stonefly nymphs (there will be little black stones around) or bigger ptails, hare's ear etc.

Other Information: The run-off has not started yet- perhaps this weekend, with warmer temps. The pond ice-out should be significantly delayed due to the perpetual winter we are having. On the other hand, the skiing has been- well- fabulous! One more wknd of Whiteface to go. C'mon up and ski and fish right at the mountain........ Look for our shop to open the first week of May.

Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: Level is very fishable....Temp: 39

Date of Update: 11/6/2006

Author: R.Finn

Highlight: Level has dropped....and so have the temps

General Update: The olives were blown out by the high water.......alas, the dry fly action is over... fish are moving into winter holds. I have been out quite a bit having success with streamers and nymphs.Checked out the S. Branch Saranac C&R yesterday...it was rippin' pretty good- came back to Ausable and caught 2.

Specifics and Tips: Streamers and nymphs fished slowly. Depth is variable...the other day I had 3 on a streamer with no weight- stripped medium speed...

Other Information: This weeks weather is warming- very tolerable for fishing.

Stream: Ausable River

Water Conditions: rising.......raining, raining,raining.....

Date of Update: 10/20/2006

Author: Rachel Finn

Highlight: Limited fishing available: Catch and Release Areas on the W.Branch Ausable and Saranac Rivers open

General Update: While the Ausable is currently rising, there has been some decent fishing to be had- if you are here at the "right moment"....Why just yesterday it was 60 and I was fishing dry flies to rising fish- we have had the most prolific BWO hatch That I have seen in years!!! The weather is key- everything has to be just right- NO WIND!!!! is the most important, and you will see olives during the warmest part of the day. Hopefully the big water will not blow the olives out- Browns are on the pre-spawn prowl, moving into deeper slower water.... the usual spots have been producing. There is also Salmon Fishing for the patient and medicated angler(kidding) . I spent 6 hrs on the Saranac yesterday and caught 1.... this is considered a good day. If going, consult your DEC syllabus for Regs. You can fish the Ausable, Boquet, and Saranac.... and yes, an abundance of water is GOOD for salmon. I will update when the W. Branch is fishable again- my guess is 2-3 days, without rain.... Snow is in the forecast for next week, time to tune up those Tele Boards and wish for powder days.......Or perhaps a warm weather trip this winter, check out the main TCO web site for options. I 'm stoked to check out some Permit fishing this Feb. in Belize... still a few spots left if you want some fun.

Specifics and Tips: The Olives have been in 3 sizes, although my guess is they will just get into the itty bitty ones. 18, 20 and 24 have been around. As with most of this type of fishing it is quite technical, and challenging.Be prepared with multiple emerger and dun patterns, plus some small rusty spinners. You can also fish nymphs an streamers LOW and SLOW......try a sink tip.

Other Information: Fishing this time of year is VERY sketchy... in no way am I encouraging a trip up here...... However, if you are here- like me, and you look out your window and say NOW... it can be alot of fun, and you can count on having nobody else on the river. Remember to dress warm- boot foot waders are VERY warm, and lots of layers. Thanks to everyone for a great season- we hope to see you all here(not all at the same time...) next year.

Highlight: It's Isonychia time! They are big and plentiful and the big fish are keyed in on them. Some of the best blue winged olive hatches of the season. Can be fish rising as far as you can see. Water temps are in the 50's. Perfect iso weather should be this weekend...drizzle or light rain, cool enough to see your breath.

General Update: The Hungry Trout Exclusive Dream Mile and our newest private acquisition, the historic Bush Country Stretch (7 miles) gives our clients more access to rarely fished water on the West Branch of the Ausable. The Twin Ponds canoe trips are extremely productive this time of year. Those big brook trout are active and hungry. Stay overnight for a real taste of Adirondack classic sporting life.

Specifics and Tips: Use your small dry fly tactics for the blue Winged Olive hatch. 7x tippet for those size 20-22 olives. Be stealthy. Fish quietly. Water is low and clear. Water is in the low 50's..fish everything a little bit slower than usual. Try a dropper off of a big dry pattern, using the dry as an indicator.

Other Information: The leaves are turning. Nights are crisp and cool. There is nothing like fall in the Adirondack Park. Whiteface Mountain is something to behold! Trout season is opened til Oct. 15. But our newest Catch & Release stretch right behind the Hungry Trout Resort is fishable year round. The fly shop will be closing around October 15 depending no the weather.
