TCO Fly Shop - Products for the Future of Fly Fishing

Have you always wanted to learn to tie your own flies but were not sure how to get started? Maybe you've been tying for a while and could use some help to get your tying skills to the next level? Maybe you are an accomplished fly tyer but would be interested in learning some cool new patterns or learn how to get more out of your materials and your tying time?

The staff at TCO Fly Shop can answer all these issues and more by providing expert instruction for people of all skill levels from beginner to advanced and fly patterns for everything from trout to tarpon. Our fly tying instructor team is comprised of experienced individuals that will teach you how to master the basic techniques to get you catching fish on your own flies. They will also focus on tips to improve your speed and efficiency at the vise, while learning new fly patterns and materials.

At TCO we schedule classes throughout the year for a variety of interests in small group settings. All materials are provided and you are encouraged to bring your own tools or use ours.

  • Fly Tying 101 – April 26, 2008
    In this class we will teach the basic techniques needed to tie flies that are simple to tie and catch fish. Each session will run from 12:00 to 4:00PM and will include a copy of “The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying” by Leeson and Schollmeyer ( a $45.00 value). Students will also receive a 10% discount on all fly tying purchases the day of the classes. Tuition for the class is $150.00 per person and will be limited to 5 students. All tools and materials will be furnished.

  • Techniques for Tying Para Dry Flies with Tom Baltz- May 13th, 2008
    Have you ever fished a midge hatch and been frustrated you can’t follow your fly on the water? Local fly tyer/guide Tom Baltz will be instructing a class on high-vis patterns you tie on 20’s and smaller. Techniques for Tom’s Para-Midge and ICSI patterns will be covered. Cost: $50

  • Techniques for Bill Skilton’s Hellgrammite and Terrestrials- May 25th, 2008
    Local fly tyer Bill Skilton will be instructing a class on how to tie some of his patterns; Including his Hellgrammite, Beetle, and Ant. Class will cover how to use his materials to tie some the best looking terrestrials in the business. Cost: $50

  • Techniques for Tying Soft Hackle Wet’s with Tom Baltz- May 27th, 2008
    Local fly tyer/guide Tom Baltz will be instructing a class on the oft forgotten soft hackle pattern. These flies are effective and work in a multitude of different environments. Class will cover techniques for tying standard partridge flies as well as soft hackles with more obscure feathers. Cost: $50

  • Fly Fishing Tour of the Spring Creeks of Cumberland County- May 10/11th

  • Tying The Caddis Lifecycle - April 12, 2008
    Back by popular demand, tying imitations for the caddis fly lifecycle. In the class you will learn how to tie the Larvae, Pupae, Adult and Spent Wing Spinner imitation of a Caddis fly. This insect is the main diet of the trout in the Tulpehocken Creek as well as most other trout streams in the East. Don't miss this one!

  • Tying the Sulphur Hatch - May 3, 2008
    Learn fly imitations of one of our favorite fly hatches, the sulphur. Classes will present flies for imitating all stages of this important mayfly hatch including nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners.
